kalighat temple now........The Kalighat temple in its present form is only about 200 years old, although it has been referred to in Mansar Bhasan composed in the 15th century, and in Kavi Kankan Chandi of the 17th century. The river over a period of time has moved away from the temple. The temple is now on the banks of a small canal called Adi Ganga which connects to the Hooghly.
Maa Kali at Kalighat Kali temple.. The speciality of Kali of this temple is the long protruded tongue made of gold. This is a different appearance from the other visualisations of Kali. The image of the deity is incomplete. Only the face of the deity was made first. The hands, made of gold and silver, the tongue, the Shiva statue and all the jewellery were added over the years. On snanyatra day, while giving the divine Mother the ceremonial bath, the priests tie their eyes with cloth coverings. On auspicious occasions like Kali Puja, Durga Puja, Poila Boishakh, the Bengali New Year day and sankranti large number of devotees throng the place with offerings.

Maa Chandi of the temple in Cuttack in the usual form.According to legend, the land where the temple is located once lay fallow. Hansa Panda, the Purohit of the then King of Kanika, used to graze his cattle on the land. One day he felt tired and took rest on a heap of dry soil. While resting, he experienced an unusual feeling within. The same night, Goddess Chandi appeared in his dream and requested him to bring her out of the land. The next day he went to the King and told him about the dream he had. With the help of the king, Hansa Panda dug the land. It is said that forty bullock carts of red sindoor came out while digging after which emerged the Deity of Maa Katak Chandi. The present temple marks the spot.

Today, Cuttack and Bhubaneswar are collectively known as the "twin cities" of Orissa.

Faith and Doing One's Duty
Baba assures us, 'Entrust your responsibility completely to Me and stay cool'. Further, He says, "Do your duty sincerely". The first step we have to take in spiritual practice is to know that we should discharge our day-to-day duties with utmost sincerity and full faith in God.The boat of life cannot be pushed forward unless we use the pair of oars to row the boat. One of the oars is 'faith' and the other is 'doing one's duty'. First, we use only the oar of 'faith'. But the boat starts swirling in circles. We leave the oar and take hold of the oar of 'doing one's duty'. Again the boat swirls round. We decide to row the boat holding together both the oar of 'faith' and the oar of 'doing one's duty'. And the boat starts darting ahead smoothly and touches the shore. If we want to cross the sea of worldly life in a row-boat of life, we must paddle or do our duty reposing unshakable and unbreakable faith in God Almighty. We must believe that it is He who makes us row the boat of life. We must strengthen our belief that success or failure, profit or loss, pleasure or pain, fame or shame that we get do not belong to us. We should strengthen our faith that Baba is our Lord, Saviour and Prime Mover of our lives. Unless we blend our deep faith in Baba, with our spirit of devotion to duty, we cannot live successfully and joyfully.
