From today onwards, we will be visiting the very sacred Ashtvinayak temples. I have never ever been to any of them but I really hope that I do get a chance to visit these temples when I go to Mumbai, India next year.
Ashtavinayaka (अष्टविनायक) literally means "eight Ganeshas" in Sanskrit. Ganesha is the Hindu deity of prosperity and learning. The term refers to a pilgrimage to the eight Hindu temples in Maharashtra state of India that house eight distinct idols of Ganesha, in a pre-ascertained sequence.
The Ashtavinayaka yatra or pilgrimage covers the eight ancient holy temples of Ganesha which are situated around Pune. Each of these temples has its own individual legend and history, as distinct from each other as the murtis in each temple.
The form of each murti of Ganesha and His trunk are distinct from one another.

According to Shastra, first you have to visit Moreshwar of Moregaon. Then visit Siddhatek, Pali, Mahad, Theur, Lenyandri, Ozar, Ranjangaon and then again Moregaon will end you Ashtavinayak Yatra.
Some of these murtis are called Swayambhu effigies, or the self-existent in Sanskrit. This is to indicate that no human created these murtis, they were found completely formed by nature.
Sri Moreswar (Mayureswar) at Morgaon - This is the most important of the eight temples and is considered as the Adya Peetha of the Ganapathya Sampradaya. The very fact that the entire sixth Khanda of the Mudgala Purana containing 20 chapters has been devoted to describing the greatness of this Kshetra speaks volumes about its value.

According to Rishi Brushundi, Ganapathi has three main abodes – Kailasa in Swarga, Seshamandiram in Patalam and Mayurapuri (Morgaon) in the earth. The temple has no beginning and no end. Even at the time of Pralaya, Vigneswara takes Yoganidra here. Brahma, Vishnu, Shankara, Devi and Surya once meditated here to know who created them and for what purpose. A Jyoti (flame) appeared before them in the form of 'Om'kara, ie Pranava Mantra. From this Pranava came out Lord Ganapati with the elephant face. Vinayaka blessed all of them and allotted them their respective duties with the instruction "before starting any endeavour first remember and worship me sothat you will face no obstacles".
The temple of Lord Mayureshwara of Morgaon has four gates. In the eastern gate are Lakshminarayana, the givers of Dharma. In the southern gate are Parvati and Shankara – givers of Artha (desired goals). Then comes the western gate where Rathi and Kama (givers of Kama) reside. Lastly in the northern gate reside Mahivaraha (Earth and Sun). By their worship Moksha is attained. Devotees worship these gates during the first four days of Shukla paksha of any month particularly Bhadrapada or Magha. Thus all deities and all sages reside in this temple. By doing this Dwara Yatra and Ganesa Puja all good desires of the devotees are fulfilled and all sins destroyed. By having Bhairava darshan, Neelakanta darshan and Kruttivas darshan in this temple, devotees achieve removal of ghost-effects in the body, cure from diseases, etc. In all, there are 23 Parivar Murthis in this temple. In the eight corners, there are eight statues of Ganapathi called as EKADANTA, MAHODARA, GAJANANA, LAMBODARA, VIKATA, VIGNARAJA, DHUMRAVARNA, and VAKRATUNDA.
A big bull(Nandi) is present in all the Shiva's temples. (Nandi is god Shiva’s vahana or vehicle.) God Shiva rides on Nandi. How then this Nandi happened to be in this Ganesha temple? There is a story. In this locality there was a temple of God Shiva. This Nandi was build for that temple. While taking the Nandi to the God Shiva's temple, cart was broken in front of Lord Mayureshwara's temple. Then another cart was build and tried to move the Nandi on that cart but that cart was also broken. This happened again and again so in order to reduce the height of Nandi the devotees begin to rub the Nandi, at that time blood begin to flow from the body of Nandi. There was sudden sound came from the heaven with words that don't reduce the size of Nandi, install this Nandi in front of the Lord Mayureshwara. The devotees followed the words and installed the Nandi after the steps.
Morgaon is located on the bank of river Karha. The story about the river is as follows: God Brahmadeva had a daughter called Shri Saraswati. One day God Brahmadeva lost his mind(Buddhi) and about to behave with her like a wife. But then he realised what he was doing. He felt ashamed about it. To clear his sins and impurity of mind he built shrines at all holy places, but still he was not satisfied. Then he came to Morgaon and started consecration of Lord Mayureshwara. He brought holy water in his Kamandalu(a small pot used to keep the water from holy rivers by gods or saints.) Somehow that kamandalu got slipped and holy water spilled on the floor. God Brahma felt bad and tried to collect the holy water. At that time Lord Mayureshwar’s words came to him as, not to collect the water, let that water from Brahma-Kamandalu flow as river Karha, which can clear/vanish all the sins, there are seven holy place within the flow of five miles. They are namely Ganesh-tirth, Bhim-tirth, Kapal-tirth, Vyas-tirth, Rishi-tirth, Sarvapunya-tirth & Ganesh-Ganga-tirth.On left side of the temple one can see a small temple of Nagna Bhairav (an obedient attendant of Lord Mayureshwara).
One more temple of Nagna Bhairav is towards East of Morgaon about a mile away. Without worshipping the Nagna Bhairava one can not complete Mayureshwar's pilgrimage. Lord Mayureshwara has given this boon to Nagna Bhairava, that one can not come in this holly place without your wish and you are the watchman of the Morgaon. Nagna Bhairava protects the devotees of the Lord Ganesha. It is not possible to every one to go to Nagna Bhairava temple which is a mile away from the Morgaon every time. So there is a small temple built out of main nave of Lord Mayureshwara where one can worship Nagna Bhairava first and then can go to the nave to worship Lord Mayureshwara.

Lord Ganesha is worshipped before starting any new work. Shri Siddhi and Shri Buddhi are within the Lord Ganesha. For doing any work one needs control on mind & Shri Buddhi gives that mind so if Buddhi will not act then it is very difficult to complete the work or one may face many obstacles in completing the work. The other wife of Lord Ganesha & sister of Buddhi is Siddhi.Siddhi means everything is achieved by which. Siddhi means power to act, penance and successful divine illumination ,entire knowledge and ever lasting prosperity is under control of Siddhi. Siddhi is not separate from Lord Ganesh. If any one worships Lord Ganesha Siddhi and the other wife of Lord Ganesha Buddhi are together with Lord Ganesha even though there are no separate idols of Siddhi & Buddhi ,that is why it is a must to pray/worship Lord Ganesha first.
And among all the holy places in the world, Morgaon is the only shrine where all 33 crore gods and goddesses are invisibly present in the nave (Hindu mythology believes that total 33 crore gods and goddesses are present.) if someone goes to Shri Durga’s temple one will get merit of visiting Shri Durga. If someone goes to the temple of God Shiva, one will get merit of visiting God Shiva. But if one visit the temple of Mayureshwara one will get merit of visiting not only Lord Ganesha but also all other gods and goddesses. Lord Mayureshwara is very powerful and potent/awake god. If one honestly wish something holy before Lord Mayureshwara, that wish will definitely becomes true that is the beliefs of devotees.
The idol of Lord Mayureshwara is very attractive. The idol is in seating position with trunk going towards left and the idol is facing East. The idol has three eyes and has diamonds in the eyes and on hands. Nagraj(the king of snakes) on the head of the idol. The original idol was black and small. But because of the layers of the red lead it looks red and big. The red lead is applied on the idol. The red lead is liked by Lord Ganesha. Twice these layers fall down from the original idol, which was seen by many people. This happened in 1788 and 1822. In the Mudgal Puran the description of the idol is as follows,
The deity has four hands and three eyes. Pash & Ankush were held in the upper hands. third hand is place on the knee, holding modak(a sweet made up of boiling milk) in the fourth hand. Dharma Raj Yudhishtir, son of the king Pandu, installed the present idol. This story is about five thousand years old. As written earlier Panch-Devata installed the original idol....A very old tree, called as Kalpa Vriksha (the tree that fulfils every desire) is present near the temple. Shri Moraya Gosavi did penance under this tree and his wish to see Lord Ganesha was fulfilled. So devotees of Lord Ganesha have faith in doing penance under this tree.

May Shri Lord Mayureshwar shower his kind blessings on us and may all our wishes and dreams come true.
One more Story about Shree Mayureshwara
Long ago there was a very puissant king named Chakrapani living in Gandali Nagari(town) of Mithila Kingdom. Queen Ugra was Mahapativrata(faithful wife). They were unhappy because they had no child. Both of them worshipped God Surya(God Sun) . With the blessing of God Surya ,Ugra was carrying their son . The embryo was so bright and powerful, that she could not bear the brilliance of it so she released the embryo in the sea. From that embryo, a brilliant and puissant child was born. The sea, disguised as a Brahmin, reached to Chakrapani and gave the child to him. As the child was born in the sea the king named him as `Sindhu’, when Sindhu grew up, his teacher (guru) Shukracharya told him to worship God Surya and became more powerful. For two thousand years continuously, Sindhu did penance and got him what he wants(the boon). In return he asked for immortality. God Surya told him that he will give him nectar (immortal drink) which will remain in his stomach (near naval). As long asthis nectar is there in his body, he won't die. After drinking nectar Sindhu became more powerful. King Chakrapani realised that his son Sindhu became intelligent and powerful with God Surya’s boon and gave him Kingdom. When Sindhu became King he started for the universal quest. With his incomparable valiant he won battles with God Indra, God Vishnu and other god’s. Sindhu kept all gods & goddesses in prison at Gandaki Nagari.King Sindhu then attacked on God Shiva and Satya Lok (the heaven). All gods and goddesses became unhappy. They worshipped their master God Ganesh. God Ganesha was delighted and said "I will take rebirth , I will become son of Parvarti and will kill Sindhu". In Krita Yuga everyone will call me as `Vinayak’, in Tretra yuga everyone will call me as ‘Mayureshwara, in Dwapar yuga I will be called as Gajanana and in Kalyug I will be named as Dhumraketu. God Shiva and Parvati left Kailash and went to mountain called Meru. Goddess Parvati did penance of Lord Ganeshawith one letter word `OM’(Ek Akshar Mantra) for 12 years. Lord Ganesha was delighted and gave her a boon as `I will take birth as your son’ on Bhadrapad Shuddha Chaturthi Parvati made an idol of Lord Ganesha with clay and started worshipping that idol. An idol turned into a live child and said `I am Lord Ganesha to whom your were worshipping. I have taken incarnation to kill demon Sindhu.' Shiva and Parvati named their son as Ganesh. As he was Shiva’s son, Shiva gave him blessing that one will get a success without any disturbance, if one will remember you by heart before starting any work. Lord Ganesha was growing day by day. During his childhood he killed many demons. Brahmadeva alias Vishva-karma the creator of universe gave Lord Ganesha pash(noose) Ankush(agoad), parashu(hatchet) & kamal(lotus). When Ganesha was ten years old, Shiva & Parvati got fed up of demon's harassment when they were moving from Meru parvat(mountain) the demon Kamalasur came in their way. Lord Ganeshachallenged Kamalasur and killed him. Lord Ganesha brought together all the Shiv-gan(attendant of God Shiva) and attacked on Gandaki Nagar of Sindhu demon. Lord Ganesha defeated Sindhu and killed his two sons. Sindhu ran away from the battlefield. Sindhu’s father advised him to make free all gods and goddesses and surrender to Lord Ganesha, but he continued the battle. Lord Ganesha attacked him with parashu(hatcher) and removed the nectar from the naval and killed Sindhu. Lord Ganesha was riding on the peacock during the battle , so he was named as `Mayureshwara’ or `Moreshwar’. After the Panch-devata(five god’s next in position to Lord Ganesha named as God Brahmadeva, God Vishnu, God Shiva, Goddess Shaksti and God Surya) requested Lord Ganesha to live in Morgaon forever for his devotees. Lord Ganesha blessed them and accepted their request. Panch-devata prepared an idol of sand, clay and precious stones and installed at Morgaon on Bhadrapada Shuddha Chaturthi. Lord Ganesha told themwhoever lives and prays over here wont fear for any obstacle or danger. Lord Mayureshwara is very powerful, potent and awaked god. If you wish something holy at Morgaon then that wish will definitely become true. This is the belief of devotees of Lord Ganesha and they experience it.
`Ganapati Bappa Moraya’ as popular acclamation is of Lord Mayureshwara .
Only Baba's Love Provides Peace in Kaliyuga
In Kaliyuga, the proportion of righteousness will occupy one quarter and evil the remaining three. If the King is good, it is but common that the people will follow him in good deeds. Due to the righteous behaviour of the King and the people, the entire nature too will perform its duty well. Three rains per month, milk in plenty, good crops and life without natural calamities will herald a peaceful and happy life. But, does the world look like this today? No. It is not. Why so? The kings or the present-day leaders and rulers down to the level of commoners, everyone is corrupt, violates the Law of Moral Order and invite disasters.Tsunami, floods or famines greet us everywhere in grief. The grim scene of withered crops, denuded forests and barren lands paint a picture of sadness on the face of Mother Nature. How can we overcome these horrifying times? There is a way to overcome it. Baba, who could kindle oil lamps with water, can definitely fill this world with peace and light. For achieving this, we need to follow one thing i.e. to follow Baba's message to the letter and spirit. Let us fill qualities like Dharma, honesty, love, sacrifice and patience in each and every heart. Then, even a child could tame animals that are arch enemies. Richly grown crops nod and dance. Wild and cruel animals turn gentle. In Baba’s Abode of Love, we all can live in peace and harmony.
May the Merciful Sri Sai Baba always shower His grace on us and our families and remove our problems and anxieties by giving us all - strength , goodluck, success and happiness with peace of mind.
