VIP darshan during weekdays banned in Shirdi
Following news is published in "The Pune Mirror" on front page today (28th January 2010). ALL EQUAL BEFORE SAI
Santosh Andhale
Finally, all will be equal in the eyes of God, much to the disappointment of the country’s pious VIPs of course. A decision to ban VIP darshans during weekdays was taken on Wednesday at a meeting of the Shri Sai Baba Sansthan Trust (SSBST) held at Mantralaya.
VIP darshans at the popular shrine has been a vexing issue because devotees were regularly inconvenienced when their queues were stopped to enable politicians and other bigwigs to worship first. The trust has now decided that ‘paid darshan’ where devotees can pay a fee to jump the regular queue will be allowed on Saturdays and Sundays only.
On a regular day, over one lakh people visit the shrine, which is the second richest in India. On holidays and weekends, the number goes upto five lakh and during festivals, it exceeds eight lakh. Though most devotees are from Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, a large number come from other parts of India. In recent years, the shrine has been attracting devotees from abroad.“To do justice to ordinary devotees, we have taken the decision at our board meeting to stop VIP darshans because it caused inconvenience. Now, we are introducing a paid darshan like the Tirupati Sansthan which has this system. The facility will be available between 9.00 am and 12.00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. We will work out the fees to be charged. At the meeting, some trust members suggested Rs 100 for regular darshan and Rs 500 for aarti. The facility will start at the temple within 7-10 days,” said Jayant Sasane of the trust. It has also been decided that the number of devotees who will be able to avail of the paid darshan will be limited to 10 per cent of the total number of people waiting in the queue for regular worship. “For instance, if there are 1,000 devotees waiting at the temple, we will allow only 100 people through paid darshan. Once they go out, another group will get a chance. Our intention is not to generate revenue but to avoid inconvenience of ordinary devotees,” added Sasane. The issue of VIPs holding up thousands of devotees has been a regular complaint. It is estimated that every VIP visit holds the queue for at least 15-20 minutes – not a minor inconvenience for pilgrims, some of who wait for five to six hours before getting close to the samadhi. During holidays, the temple town is so full of pilgrims that no accommodation is available at hotels and charity hostels. The number of pilgrims visiting the shrine has been on the increase in the last five years and there is also a growing demand for VIP darshan from ministers, political leaders, government officers and celebrities. The trust gets thousands of requests for VIP darshan every day. At any time, the trust’s public relation office is filled with people seeking VIP darshan passes to avoid waiting in a queue. Temple authorities say that most VIP darshan pass seekers want regular darshan for the early morning aarti that starts around 4.30 am and Madhyanah Aarti which starts around noon. The SSBST (Shirdi) is one of the richest trusts in Maharashtra with an annual revenue that exceeds Rs 240 crore. The trust has invested huge amounts of money in property and government bonds which is estimated to be around Rs 450 crore. It also donates money to social causes and relief efforts. There are devotees of Sai Baba who are donating a crore of rupees to the trust each year.
In the city, Siddhivinayak Temple Trust started the paid darshan system four years ago. “ We give one time darshan to anybody by charging Rs 50. These devotees have a separate queue. People mostly avail of this pass on Tuesdays and holidays. We also issue a yearly pass that costs Rs 6,000. those who avail this pass can come for darshan on any day during the year. It is a successful system. We have no problem implementing this system,” said Hanumant Jagtap, CEO of Siddhivinayak Temple Trust.
Purify Your Mind
Impurities like desire, anger, lust, greed, pride, delusion, jealousy & ego exist in the mind like clouds covering the sky, and with a clouded sky the sun becomes obscured. In the same way, when we remove the clouds of impurity from the mind, the mind is in a position to perceive everything crystal clear. Accept the situation as it comes. Never get awakened to anger or provoked as you’re already feeble to move a finger.
If you tread the path and find that your mind is not as pure as you wish it to be, don’t worry. You must realize that the movement is progressive. You should move on as guided by Pujya Gurudev in spite of the negativity in the mind. Be alert & objective, watch the clouds as they form and dissolve. You must move on without justifying those negative qualities within you. Although it is pointless to struggle viciously with mental impurities, meaningful self-effort must be employed to control and gradually eliminate them.

In this above process, try to see that impure thoughts and feelings are not allowed to find expression in the realm of speech and action. When you observe the rising of anger, try to contain it, to nip it in the bud. Once you begin to express words out of anger, the situation gets out of hand.
When the mind is filled with anger, hate, greed and passion, the spirit in you turns away from the Divine Self, and a distance begins to grow between you and your innermost Self. But when the mind is filled with love, cheerfulness, contentment, and other Divine virtues, the distance is shortened. Baba’s saying, “You take one step towards God and God takes one hundred steps towards you.” When the mind shines with perfect purity, there is no distance at all. Through the clear mirror of mind you realize, “I am He!” and become free of the cycles of birth and death.

Baba Alone Blesses us With Pure, Divine Love
Although several friends, intimate and near and dear ones, are around us, great treasure and pleasure of life are within one's reach, we sometimes get the feeling of 'loneliness'. A sense of lacking something and an unknown feeling of dissatisfaction engulfs us. We hunger for pure, spotless, intimate love that never abandons us. Why do we feel so? The reason - "What does 'I' mean? Is it the body? No!" Although several activities like eating, drinking, sleeping, listening, seeing that we do, of course, appease the sense organs of the body, our inner soul is not satisfied. Once we get the feeling that 'we are distinct from the physical body composed of five elements', we think that the void can be filled only by divinity. Baba, who incarnated on the earth for the sake of mankind, shall only show the path to true and enduring happiness. The search for God is surely a quest for joy. God is the embodiment of Ever-New Joy. We need to search for Baba. Like a child, we must long to belong to Baba, chanting His name and always listening to Him, as He alone can bless us live blissfully. When we cry like a child for Baba's Presence, He will bless us grow and glow in health and strength, plenty and peace. Baba's blessings are spiritual riches. To come to Baba is to reach the Abode of Love, Light and Delight.
