Its been a long time since we have paid our respects to any of the temples like we used to do during the circulation of our Teerth Yatra mails. Like I always say, Even I have no idea what is going to be in the Shri Shirdi Sai Speaks mail, until I sit down to compose it..And honestly speaking, physically I might be the media to circulate these wonderful pictures of the sacred temples but in reality, it is the grace of our Shri Sadguru Sainath because of which we are able to have the darshan of the places of such spiritual importance.
May Sai always show us His presence in some form or the other and May He help us to destroy the ego with in us..
Today , we will be paying our respects to the Giant Buddha of Leshan.
Click on any of the below pictures to see the larger view. They all are a must see and I am sure you will be amazed to see them all.
The Giant Buddha of Leshan (aka Dafo) is the tallest stone Buddha statue in the world, carved out of a cliff face by an 8th-century monk in southern Szechuan province. The Giant Buddha overlooks the confluence of the Minjiang, Dadu and Qingyi rivers and faces the sacred Mount Emei (with which it shares its World Heritage status).
Historical documents show that the carving of the Leshan Dafo was begun in AD 713. According to legend, there was a river monster that lived on the confluence of the rivers. The monster often caused floods that capsized passing boats. Believing that the statue would protect boats travelling up the river, Master Haitong, a Buddhist abbot of the Lingyun Monastery, initiated the project by raising the necessary funds.
The project commenced in the first year of the reign of the Tang Emperor Tang Xuanzong. Master Haitong hoped that the presence of the Great Buddha would subdue the monster and so pacify the swift currents thereby protecting the boatmen who traversed the treacherous river.
On the first day of construction, an avaricious official had his eye on the money raised for the project and tried to blackmail Master Haitong. Master Haitong defied him and said: You could gouge out my eyes but not touch the money donated to build the Buddha. The official flew into a rage and challenged him to do it. Master Haitong gouged out his own eyes and presented them in a tray to the official. The man fled in awe and terror.
Master Haitong died when the work was only half done. Zang Chou and Wei Gao, two of his disciples, continued the work. After 90 years' effort, the Buddha was finally completed in 803, in the 19th year of Emperor Dezong's reign.
Today, there are still some strong currents where the three rivers meet - but none that threaten the tourist ferries. The "Mount Emei Scenic Area with Leshan Giant Buddha" was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
Visitors stare in awe at the Buddha from the tourist ferries and from a terrace next to his ear.
Known as Dafo, the statue depicts a seated Maitreya Buddha with his hands resting on his knees, gazing across the river with heavy-lidded eyes. Maitreya is the future Buddha, who will appear to preach the dharma when the teachings of Gautama Buddha have faded away. He was especially popular during the 4th to 7th centuries and his images can be found throughout the Buddhist world, conveying his characteristic air of expectancy and promise.
According to records, it took 90 years to carve the huge Buddha from the first year (713) of the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty (618-907) to the 19th year (803) of Emperor Dezong's reign.
The stair near the Giant Buddha
Standing 71 meters (233 feet) tall, Dafo is the tallest Buddha statue in the world. His shoulders are 28 meters (92 feet) wide and his smallest toenail can accommodate a seated person. Each eyebrow is 18 feet long. According to a local saying, "The mountain is a Buddha and the Buddha is a mountain"
On one side of the terrace is a modern statue of the monk Haitong, and behind is the Lingyun Temple Museum with exhibits on the construction and renovations of Dafo.
Just one of the Leshan Giant Buddha's shoulders is large enough to house a full sized basketball court with room to spare
Standing 71 meters (233 feet) tall, the Giant Buddha of Leshan is taller by 17 meters than the standing Buddha in Afghanistan, making it the tallest in the world.
His head is covered with 1021 buns of curly hair, each large enough to support a big round table
Several drainage passages hidden in the Buddha's hair, collar, chest, and holes in the back of his ears preventing the Buddha from serious erosion and weathering. He has been lovingly maintained on a regular basis throughout his 1,200-year history, but is still a bit mossy.

Visitors are dwarfed by the Buddha's giant foot
The Buddha is so big that one hundred people can stand on any one of its feet.
Or so some locals imagined when black streaks appeared on the rose-colored cheeks of the towering 7th-century figure, hewn from sandstone cliffs in the forests of southern China. They worried they had angered the religious icon.
The culprit, it turned out, was the region's growing number of coal-fired power plants. Their smokestacks spew toxic gases into the air, which return to earth as acid rain. Over time, the Buddha's nose and other facial areas turned darkened.
The heavy-lidded eyes of the Giant Buddha
May this massive Buddha of Leshan fill our hearts with peace, love, faith and devotion.
