What would you think if one day, you entered a place of worship and saw on the walls a drawing of Neo from the Matrix next to Superman, flying to save the day while airplanes are crashing on the WTC towers? Crazy? Well, not in Thailand!

North of the Kingdom, near the Burmese border, is the quiet town of Chiang Rai, famous for its jungle treks and many various hill-tribes. But Chiang Rai is also home of probably the most peculiar Buddhist temple ever built:
Wat Rong Khun, also known as “The White Temple”.
Just thirteen kilometers south of town, this whitewashed glittering unusual temple is a popular attraction among locals and tourists. It has been visited by over 5 million people (200,000 foreigners) already since the beginning of its construction in 1997.
Just thirteen kilometers south of town, this whitewashed glittering unusual temple is a popular attraction among locals and tourists. It has been visited by over 5 million people (200,000 foreigners) already since the beginning of its construction in 1997.
Unlike most century old temples, Wat Rong Khun is the “dream-come-true” work of art of a famous Thai Buddhist art painter: Charlemchai Kositpipat.
The millionaire artist spent his own money to fund the construction of his vision without ever soliciting contributions from the government or anyone else. His creative thinking and love of Art made him return to his home town and dedicate the rest of his life building the temple as an offering to Buddha and, in the future, turn it into a national art treasure.
Wat Rong Khun is unique from other temples in that it has been constructed entirely in a radiant white color with sparking reflections from mirrored glass mosaics embedded in the white plaster.
The temple is the idea of Mr. Chalermchai Kositpipat, one of Thailand’s most renowned artists, who wanted to build a temple all in white to signify the purity of Lord Buddha. The artist continues to puts his religious belief and desire to enrich Buddhism in Thailand into his contemporary art design. The construction of the White Temple is Khun Chalemchai’s master work, which he refers to as an offering to Lord Buddha and his beloved country.
The white color stands for Lord Buddha’s purity; the white glass stands for Lord Buddha’s wisdom that “shines brightly all over the Earth and the Universe.” in other words the mirrors symbolize Buddha’s dhamma, teaching men to observe their own mind and reflect kindness towards others.
The bridge leading to the temple represents the crossing over from the cycle of rebirth to the Abode of Buddha. The small semicircle before the bridge stands for the human world. The big circle with fangs is the mouth of Rahu, meaning impurities in the mind, a representation of hell or suffering

The creation of the temple began in 1997. It has seen an investment of more than 30 million baht (US$913,000), which has been accumulated over 20 years from the sale of Mr Chalermchai’s paintings.
It is estimated that another 60 to 70 years is needed to complete the temple, which has nine main buildings in all: the ubosot, the hall containing Lord Buddha’s relics, the hall containing Buddha images, the preaching hall, the contemplation hall, the monk’s cell, the door façade of the Buddhavasa, the art gallery, and the toilets which will be built on an area of 7 rai (about 3 acres .
Under a high sun, the White Wat glitters in all its splendor. Different than the traditional style of many Thai temples, it is covered with a combination of whitewash and tiny mirror chips that make it shine like porcelain from afar.
The whole architecture as well as the statues all around have been carefully studied and are imbued with riddles, teachings and Buddhist philosophy.
The Temple is surrounded by a pond, home of dozens of white and black fish guarded by dragons and fantastic mythological creatures.
“Gate of Heaven”, guarded by Rahu (the One who controls men’s fate) on the left and Death (The One who controls men’s life) on the right.

The big circle with fangs is the mouth of Mara or Rahu, meaning impurities in the mind, a representation of hell or suffering
Before crossing the bridge of the “Cycle of Rebirth”, one cannot prevent getting the chills gazing upon the hundreds of sculpted hands reaching up from “Hell”, symbolizing the way to happiness through overcoming cravings.
Before entering the temple grounds, morbid and spooky statues and hanging heads welcome the new visitor.
Skeletons and Demons warn the visitor about the dangers of Alcohol and Smoking.
This piece of art must symbolize hell and how people in hell will suffer from their bad karma.
Twisted demon faces observe and mock the visitor as he prepares to purge his soul from cravings.

Next to the white temple, on the other side of the pond, is also a the “Gharavasa” (the layman quarters) where an Art gallery, a preaching hall and a “golden public restroom” are located. This is by far the most beautiful public restroom ever done in the world I guess.
This temple-like building is supposed to represent the Body (as opposed to the white temple that represents the Mind). Charlemchai built the two bots (white and gold) in hope to teach people to let go and not cling to substance or money, and not to perceive the physical body as an assumed identity.
Whether or not his message will reach visitors’ soul, Wat Rong Khun (scheduled to be completed by 2070) remains one of the most unusual and interesting places of worship I have ever visited with a deep meaning behind every statue, corner or architectural design representing the wild creativity and vision of one gifted Thai artist.

All of the paintings inside the ubosot (assembly hall) have golden tones. The four walls, ceiling, and floor contain paintings showing an escape from the defilements of temptation to reach a celestial “all seeing” state. On the roof, there are four kinds of animals representing earth, water, wind and fire. The elephant stands for the earth; the naga (Buddhist grouping of serpent deities) stands for water; the swan’s wings represent wind; and the lion’s mane represents fire.
Undoubtedly the most bizarre element of the design is the presence of contemporary images throughout the interior. Images of the Predator from the Schwarzenegger film franchise, Spiderman, Batman, Superman, Avatar, Keanu Reeves’ character in the Matrix, rocket ships, and many others line the walls of the sanctuary.
May the Lord Buddha in Wat Rong Khun buddhist temple in Chiang Rai, Thailand bless our souls with eternal peace and grace us with the wisdom, to let go of the bad temptations within us .
Go Ahead With Faith in Baba
When an opportunity is lost or faced with a set-back, it is but human nature to feel frustrated and desperate in life. In such times, life looks like a parched and desert land. Will it be sensible to lose heart just for one incident? Is it correct to lose faith in God? Instead of grieving that God ignored us in such hard times, it would be better to strengthen our faith in God by Baba's teachings. We should remember Baba more and more. We have to repent for our wrong doings, plead for His mercy. Just as a bird with a broken wing is able to fly high once it sprouts its wings, likewise, one who did not get Baba's grace has the opportunity of getting His grace showered on him in a greater measure at a later date. For this, unflinching faith is the pre-requisite. So, we should never turn our back, get frustrated or dejected. Is not the lost opportunity only the first but not the last one! One who has been defeated in life will fight back with renewed energy to boldly face any challenging troubles. In this practice, he would come closer to God. We have to seek Baba's shelter with a strong faith and in the spirit of total self-surrender. He is magnanimous. He is in every inch of this universe, Omnipresent and ready to console and will turn the deserted lives into green meadows. It is enough to go ahead with firm faith in Baba and nothing can scare us.

Leaving out pride and egoism and with no trace of them, you should surrender yourself to me who am seated in your heart
